For now, check out what InsideSTL has to say about the album:
'The Earthworms take full advantage of DJ Crucial's lush and diverse background of beats for their follow-up release. Despite the album's staggering 67-minute run time, the 17 tracks flow seamlessly from one to the next. It is a perfect representation of F5 Records' sound, and a style that seems unique to St. Louis. Of course, a host of notable guests are featured on the album, including local favorite Steve Ewing on 'Get Up!' |

Test Presses and Dub Plates is a collection classic F5 material, packaged together into one continuous mix of timeless bangers, transcending silly industry divisions between the gangster and backpacker, thug and emo kid.
Notice first the F5 artists: Serengeti, Hi-Fidel, Nato Caliph, The Committee (w/Toyy and Jia Davis), Jonathan Toth from Hoth, and Altered States, all of whom have garnered national praise from no less than UGHH, Giant Peach, Vapors, URB, and glowing reviews from the now-defunct HipHopInfinity.com. Next, notice the guest spots: MF Doom, MC Eiht, Slug, MF Grimm, JUICE, Rayna Shine, J-TREDS, and Rubberroom. Convinced yet? If not, pay attention to the man who introduces Test Presses and Dub Plates, none other than Crucial’s idol and mentor, the legendary DJ Premier.
Avoiding Pro-Tools like the plague, Crucial is as adept with the Technics as he is the classic SP 1200 and MPC. To pin down his production style requires searching that sonic range between Primo and Pete Rock. In Crucial’s sample-heavy beats, horns mingle with strings and Spanish guitars, snares skitter over 808 drops, and vocal samples are scratched together for choruses and flavor. The result is a music both classic and revolutionary, the kind of hip-hop nostalgia longs for and 2006 is lucky to have. |

Using eclectic samples, unique drum patterns and bizarre metaphors, (with production from DJ Crucial and Kenautis Smith as well) Jonathan takes you into the depths of his Mind, concentrating on the concepts of reality, history, metaphysics, time travel, dream state and evolution. The scene is set within a Star Trek episode (written by Jonathan) where Captain Kirk, Spock and other crew members of the Enterprise return for a surprise visit.
His lyrics run along story-telling lines as opposed to the braggadocio-based rhetoric of radio-playable rap. His basic philosophy of art can be heard throughout this precedent setting achievement--that is, if everyone is an individual, no music should sound the same. With role models like RunDMC, MF Doom, Doctor Octagon, Quasimoto, Company Flow and Sage Francis, it's no wonder why, it's hard to classify this type of creation. He calls it 'hiphopera'--that'll work. |

NATO CALIPH gets audiences on their feet and dancing to thought-provoking, socially conscious lyrics. This prolific Battle Rap Champ has collaborated with artists ranging from Murphy Lee of the St. Lunatics, Bits & Pieces, MF Grimm and Hi Fidel. Well-known to the St. Louis underground hip-hop listener, his impressive body of recordings reaches much further then the Mississippi River. Nato was recently granted an exclusive digital feature with Sprint Mobile on a worldwide level.
He’s moved crowds from coast to coast like most rappers in his position. However Caliph does more then entertains with pungent lyrics; he also attempts to share life experiences to improve those around him, family, friends, and the audience. The individuality, originality and heady lyrical content grab listeners from the onset. He seasons his witty wordplay without use derogatory or foul language. He eschews the glorification of drugs, sex or violence in his music. These are the over riding reasons that Nato attracted the ear of DJ Crucial who produced the majority of Cipher Inside, including the single All I Know. |

Hi Fidel once again travels back from the future to bless us with some other-wordly rhymes with beats by our main Mr. Crucial.Check out what okayplayer has to say
'That emcee is a Chicago-born cat named Hi Fidel who shares many of 'Geti's eccentricities, including his gift for off-kilter song concepts, rhyming as (or about) strange characters, and dipping in and out of different voices and rhyme styles from song to song. All these qualities, and many more, are on display on his newest LP The Company of Wolves. At times Fidel comes off startlingly similar to 'Geti (who drops a guest-verse on the track 'Patty Farmington'), spitting his raps in a slurry slow-flow and worshiping at the 'weirdo alter' ruled by Rap deities with names like Doom, Del, and Keith. But his changeable cadence, (which lends itself to comparisons with the likes of various second-tier Wu-Tang-ers, Mos Def, and C-Rayz Walz, amongst others) and his tendency to spit braggadocio or address more ostensibly populist subject-matter (such as street violence and the travails of the working man) in his less abstract moments help establish him as his own man and a shining example of uniqueness in an industry where doing what everybody else is doing is often the only way to make a buck.' |

This is either Serengeti's 2nd or 9th album, we don't know. Either way it's brought to you by our friends at the Frozen Food Section, and Day by Day will be helping out too. Sweet eh?
Noodle Arm Whimsy was only worked on during the summer like tans. Serengeti featuring Dirty Heat. Join them through the fabulous tales of capriciousness and enjoyment rather than support war rap so forcefully shoved down throats. Ugh. Yes, it is here containing such instant classics as 'PILATES' (like fat women do them), 'The breakfast of champions remix' (the definition of tony danza), 'FAST LIVIN' and 'the story of Luke' (dont put that shit out man). EXTRA CREDIT says, 'man this is how rap is s'posed to be man, you know ill...' DONT TRUST HIM. be your own judge. Pick up a copy of the noodles, it cant disappoint. Production by Serengeti, Miles Bonny, J-Toth, Extra Credit, Midas Wells and Omni Presence, Kenautis Smith, DJ Crucial, Dirty Heat and Engleburt. Featuring Tucker Booth, J-Toth and Jake. |

The debut from CHI towns finest Serengeti, this CD presents the drunken mumblings of a monk cooked up by our own beatsmith DJ Crucial.
Since we're biased, here are some other people's thoughts on Dirty Flamingo.
'Crucial blesses Serengeti with a full array of production and cuts for this release. Serengeti in return laces each track with a variety of rhyme schemes and styles'
-RapNetwork.com
“Dirty Flamingo” is dope. The style reminds me of a cross between Ghostface and Black Star. Producer DJ Crucial meshes both funk and jazz soundbites to create a solid album. Emcee Serengeti raps crispy and stylistic verses with a clever delivery. When you hear tracks like “Chuck Norris,” “Busty Women” and “Ms. Nipple Queen” you can’t go wrong. From the sound of this album and the accompanying single, it’s obvious that F5 and artist, Serengeti, are serious about their hip hop.

Madeira (n. muh-DEER-ah) 1. Island in the Atlantic near the northern coast of Africa; colonized by the Portuguese in the 15th Century; birthplace of sugar plantations. 2. Type of wine exported from the island. 3. The girl who ripped out Hi-Fidel's heart.
Here F5 presents the sequel to the single that set it off back in '98, 'Madeira II'. This A-Side is another showcase of Fidel's gift of storytelling, continuing the saga of one girl's witchy ways.
On the flip side, 'Fiery' is a hot unreleased track with some unrelenting drum hits from DJ Crucial. |
