DJ Agile One

Due to general assumptions about Asians (or those Chinese as they are often referred to in the midwest) and women (bitches, chicks, etc.), its been a long road for Agile-1 to prove herself in the hip hop world. Though Korean by birth, she was adopted by hip hop at an early age. And though her upbringing was humble and isolated, including brief stints in Ohio, Louisiana, and Iowa, a rumbling passion grew inside her that wouldn’t leave her alone. She got her first second-hand record player without pitch control in 1998, two years after her move to St. Louis. On this device, Agile would listen to her beloved independent rap records over and over, Natural Resource, Juggaknots, Lootpack, Molemen, etc. wishing she had a mixer and some Technics. Through much saving and maybe a little scamming, the dream was realized the following year. In the meantime, she honed her skills at KWUR, a college radio station, and made many connects in STL. The local deejays embraced her, and for that she is thankful. In 2000, Agile started spinning on the Science at Blueberry Hill, a triumph in its own rite as she had been kicked out (with her records) so many times before she turned 21. Now its 2003 and the resume is stacked. Though firmly attached to the underground and independent, she will rock the socks off a club with those jiggy-ass tracks. She’s done shows with emcees, mainly of the sick and female variety (Toyy, L.O., and Lotus). She’s written music reviews and articles for various publicatoins. She won the first battle she entered (August 2002). And of course, you can catch her hooking up the equipment and carrying her own crates. Spot her on Friday nights at Blueberry Hill’s Duck Room for the live broadcast of the Science. Anywhere in-between she’s teaching classes at a local middle school in the subjects English & History. Her advice to women: if you wanna make it as a deejay, or anything for that matter, you better not rely on lookin cute up there--sex sells but perseverence and real skills win in the end.

Shouts: F5 crew, Science crew, Fat Laces crew, and all you lovely hip hop cultivators out there.
